Behavior of the ocean radar cross-section at low incidence, observed in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream

چکیده
Observational results derived from the airborne Cband scatterometer RESSAC looking at small incidence angles (521”) were acquired in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment in February and March 1991. Although the instrument was primarily designed to study the directional spectra of long waves, it is also possible to process the data to examine the behaviour of the radar cross-section U’ versus incidence @ and azimuth 4. Although the classical physical or empirical models of a’(@, 4) predict that the anisotropy of U’ versus azimuth increases with wind speed for a given incidence angle 8, it is found that under some conditions, this behaviour does not occur. By contrast, the anisotropy shows strong minima on certain occasions. Given the high-resolution upper ocean current measurements from Airborne expendable Current Profilers deployed on 5 March 1991, the regions of anisotropic minima could be indeneed from the three sets of observations (March 4, 5, and 7) downwind of the core of the Gulf Stream with a maximum current of 2 m sC1, and downwind of the current speed maxima of an anticyclonic-rotating warm core ring juxtaposed along the North Wall. On three other days (February 27, March 2 and 6), no clear anisotropic minima of was found, because the upper ocean current effects were obscured by variability in surface wind field.

Ocean Remote Sensing with Airborne K.-Band Scatterometer
A bstnzct An airborne Ku-band scatterometer (NUSCAT) was used to measure ocean backscatters during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (S WADE). The objective is to improve understanding of the relationship between ocean radar backscatter and near surface winds. BackScatter measurements are presented for Gulf-Stream boundary, low wind, and large wave effects. Over the boundary crossings, large...
متن کاملMonopole Antenna Radar Cross Section Reduction with Plasma Helix
In this paper, a new method for radar cross section reduction of a monopole antenna is proposed. In this method, a plasma helix like fluorescent bulbs is placed around the antenna element. The selected plasma parameter for this medium acts as an absorber without disturbing the antenna performance. The simulations show that radar cross section of simulated antenna is reduced in a wide frequency ...
متن کاملObservation of hurricane-generated ocean swell refraction at the Gulf Stream north wall with the RADARSAT-1 synthetic aperture radar
In this study, we analyze the refraction of long oceanic waves at the Gulf Stream’s north wall off the Florida coast as observed in imagery obtained from the RADARSAT-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) during the passage of Hurricane Bonnie on August 25, 1998. The wave spectra are derived from RADARSAT-1 SAR images from both inside and outside the Gulf Stream. From the image spectra, we can deter...
متن کاملStatic Strain Aging Behavior of Low Carbon Steel Drawn Wire
The static strain aging is a phenomenon that can change the mechanical properties of low carbon steels. Thus, the static strain aging behavior of low carbon steel wires after drawing process is studied. To do so, the wires are austenitized at different temperatures and cooled in different rates. Then the wires are drawn and aged at a specific temperature and time. Before and after aging of each...
متن کاملHydraulic Network Modeling to Analyze Stream Flow Effectiveness on Heat Transfer Performance of Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers
In this article, stream flow effectivness is based on hydraulic network studied in the shell-side of a shell and tube heat exchange as a case study. For an appropriate heat exchangers rating design to meet a specified duty, it's better to consider each stream flow separately. Using the hydraulic network principals, a set of the correlations for calculating different stream flow rates in the cro...
